2015 was a great year in music

Uptown Funk

2015 might have been the first time in recent memory where I put away my favorite music from the 80s and 90s & listened to more current than past hits. Last year started the trend towards better music, and this year was a great music year in recent memory!

According to Nielsen, Top 40 radio is having a resurgence as the most popular radio format among the 18-34 and 25-54 crowd.

Music is actually back to being fun to listen to again. This year’s top hits remind me of the days in the 80s and 90s when you heard a song for what it should be: Fun to listen to, have lasting power, & most importantly define a time period.

2015 also reminds me of the 80s and early 90s where you mention a song, and a majority of the people around you would say, “hey I know that song and I like it. This is my favorite one at the moment!”

It also is not hurting that many of the top hits this year have a very late 80s/early 90s retro sound to it.

Note: Remember Daft Punk “Get Lucky” back in 2013? The trendsetters who always seem to define what music may sound like years after they put a song out, may have done it again!!

Below are some of top hits of the year from the Top 40, Rhythmic, & Dance charts (courtesy of Mediabase) that are among my favorite this year! Also I will unveil my personal Top song of 2015!! Full chart is available at http://www.allaccess.com/mediabase/q/report/yearToDate/format/H1/panel/R (Free Registration Required)

And here is my favorite song of 2015:

DJ Snake f AlunaGeorge I Know You like It

This song defined the year in my opinion.  I Know You Like It was originally was released in 2011. This year’s version was a  collaboration between AlunaGeorge and remixed by DJ Snake.

The song is my top song for 2015 because

  1. It has great lyrics –
Some people want me to be heads or tails
I say no way, try again another day

I should be happy, not tipping the scales
I just won’t play letting my life get away
  2. An awesome hook
You know you like it but it drives you insane
You know you like it but it drives you insane
You know you like it but you’re scared of the shame
What you want, what you gonna do?
You know you like it but it drives you insane
Only because you know that you wanna feel the same
You know you like it but it drives you insane
What you want, what you gonna do?
  3. Lets you escape into the beat for the last part of the song.

It was also big enough to crossover on the top 40, Rhythmic, and Dance charts. Let’s hope more of this type of music continues in 2016 making next year as great as this year was!!! Happy New Year!! Wishing you all the best in 2016!!
